The Challenge:

Each week, choose one plastic-packaged item that you buy regularly and commit to PERMANENTLY substitute a home-grown or non-plastic-packaged alternative.

Here are a few suggestions:

Daily coffee? Bring your own mug instead of sending a plastic lid to the landfill every day.

Laundry Detergent? Buy powder instead of liquid.

Juice? Get it in glass only, then recycle!

Water? It's free at the water fountain and at your sink.

Styrofoam is extremely recyclable. It's #6 and it doesn't matter if it has a number on it or not, as styrofoam is easily recognized by you and automatically recognized by recycling processes Food service items, such as cups, plates, bowls, cutle...

No more fresh yummy salsa or hummus!

Alright folks! After the past week of reading blogs, and watching heart-wrenching videos on Youtube, I feel awful about my plastics consumption. Therefore, I am giving up my delicious fresh salsa and hummus in plastic containers. This is just a small step in a journey of many, many steps in the future, but for now I'm putting the kibosh on my wonderfully delicious, HOT Casa Sanchez salsa from Whole Foods, and any creamy delicious (and highly addicting) fresh hummus in evil plastic containers.

I… Continue

Status quo...

I currently:

  • bring my lunch in canning jars and cloth napkins.

  • buy in bulk (meaning one large plastic container) in stead of individual plastic containers.

  • refuse plastic silverware whenever possible.

  • refuse straws often.

  • choose take out food by what kind of packaging it comes in. (example: the Blue Water Taco near work wraps burritos in alluminum foil and doesn't force a plastic bag on me.)

I want to:

  • stop eating

Small Steps

I've been doing a lot of thinking and talking with my friends and family. My nature is really one of trying to be more aware of what I'm doing and build community with those around me. In the short term it help me to prepare for change and in the long term it helps keep me on target. Yesterday morning, at breakfast with my women friends, we talked about how so many people we know suffer from a disease of "affluence" - buying too much of what they don't need and replacing items with more-better i… Continue

another challenge?

I seem to have enough on my plate right now and yet here I am jumping into another challenge. Admittedly, this is something that's been on my list for a while. My girls, now 19 and 22, grew up re-cycling and composting. They complained from time-to-time when they were young and it's funny now to hear them complain that so many people they meet now don't re-cycle or compost.

Long ago I switched to bringing my own bag when I shopped for groceries; I carry a travel mug for coffee;… Continue
