What gives? What's your plastic-free pledge this week?
After ditching so many high-volume items from our grocery list, I decided to take a slight breather to regroup and plan the next cuts from our larder. So this week I'm swearing off a lower-volume item: cornbread. Usually we buy it premade (packaged in plastic) or in a mix (cardboard box w/plastic liner). I found a yummy mix in a paper bag, so I'm making this little adjustment in our habits.

Mmmm - I love cornbread. Is it the sweet kind or the salty? It's easy for me to be distracted by food...
I sent away for cloth produce bags from Reusablebags.com. We already used the reusable shopping bags, but I will now forswear the use of any plastic produce bags for fruits, vegetables, and dry bulk items. Still need to use the plastic for the sticky bulk stuff like dried cherries, but this will go a long way. I had tried to go naked with my produce once (the produce, not me), but that really didn't work out well. Since we are vegetarian and I try to buy most of our food fresh, I found that rounding up multiple lemons, peppers, potatoes, etc. made for a slow checkout and cranky fellow patrons. I estimate that this will reduce 10-15 plastic bags each week over the winter, 5-8 over the summer.
